The Kinderhospital Osnabrück is a very old hospital. Founded in 1872 by Osnabrück citizens, the Kinderhospital has survived two world wars, continuing it’s efforts to care for sick children of the Osnabrück region.
The Kinderhospital started with a small number of beds and staff, today we have arrived at a size of 131 beds (89 in general pediatrics, 42 in child psychiatry). We employ more than 300 persons, including several part-time employees.
Our buildings have grown with the needs for space, since WW2 we have constantly built additional wings to accommodate our child psychiatry, larger wards for the newborns and infants, a new cafeteria, rooms for outpatient departments and many more.
Our hospital leaves a very special impression to all visitors due to the consequent pediatric touch in equipment and furnishings. Many wooden decorations have been manufactured by one of our attending physicians. On the “Obere Station” as an example, you can see an individual theme for each room (“cows room”, “horses room” etc.), all together forming a small village. Children appreciate this, many ask to be housed in a specific room with their favorite animals.
In the 19th century, many children from poor families had no health insurance and were therefore cared for by the Kinderhospital with the help of donations. Nowadays, all German children have their mandatory insurance and therefore, most of our income results from payments by health insurance companies.
Unfortunately, not all children in the world have access to medical treatment. This is especially true for children from very poor regions and regions with ongoing wars. Thus, we continue to admit children with difficult-to-treat diseases from all over the world who have no insurance and cannot finance their medical care on their own. For their treatment, we still rely on donations from many Osnabrück citizens, as in the 19th century. Donations cover the material costs for these patients, while the personell of the Kinderhospital treats them for free.
